Volunteer
Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum volunteers help make history come alive. Volunteers are an active part of the museum, providing invaluable resources through educational programs, assisting with daily operations and our long-term goals. Volunteering at the Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum provides daily interaction and continuing educational benefits through presentations, lectures and demonstrations.
Volunteers may volunteer their time in a number of ways. Volunteers can be called on to interpret educational materials to the public, assist museum staff behind-the-scenes with exhibits, cataloguing, and research as well as help with special events and provide administrative support. For anyone with a desire to give their time, there are many different ways he/she can assist at the Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum.
Historical Interpreter:
Provide guided tours around the Old Post Quadrangle and assist with educational programs and events. Programs and tours are provided for all ages. Days and times vary as do size and age level of groups. Interpreters should be able to physically navigate through the Historic Landmark area, interact with a variety of patrons and maintain a warm and friendly attitude at all times. Volunteers in this role gain a familiarity with Fort Sill history, program content and the museum. The museum will provide the period correct clothing for the volunteer. We currently have three groups in need of volunteers - Buffalo Soldiers, US Deputy Marshals and Gentle Tamers. We are also beginning an Infantry Soldier group very soon.
Work with Collections:
Get a “hands on” perspective of the collections held in the Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum. Volunteers in the Collections and Archives Departments will have the opportunity to assist the Collections staff and the Archivist with the inventory, processing, and cataloging of various documents and objects in the Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum's collections.
Work with Exhibits:
Volunteers in the Exhibits Department will have the opportunity to assist the Exhibits staff with designing new, interactive exhibits for visitors. Volunteers with the exhibits department are required to have some carpentry, electrical as well as graphic design skills.
Research and Writing:
Each year the Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum receives many requests for information from the Archives. Research volunteers assist the Archivist in researching resources as well as provide directions to a variety of resources to onsite researchers.
Administrative Work:
Filing, data entry, fact-checking, organizing supplies, conducting mailings, preparing materials, re-foldering documents, taking photographs and doing research are all tasks completed by volunteers working behind-the-scenes. Though the work is often not glamorous, volunteers in these assignments help to make historical information available to the public.

- A Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum staff member will contact you to arrange an interview to learn more about your skills, abilities, and interests.
- If there is a good fit, a start date and training will be scheduled.
